As the new Durango School District 9-R Activities/Athletic Director, I would personally like to say thank you for this opportunity to represent and work with such an amazing community! Coming from Denver, my family and I have been welcomed with such open arms. I am excited to be part of DHS and look forward to meeting students, parents and community members and working with you this fall!
I believe in the power of sports and the ever-important character it embeds in our youth. Sports and co-curricular activities and interests provide many positive opportunities for engagement, inclusion and growth for both students and coaches; and these opportunities also create important connections and links to school, community, family and youth.
Durango School District 9-R Food Services stays true to their core value of creating a healthy food environment to support student achievement through local food partnerships. In addition to a robust farm to school program that supports local beef and agriculture, the school district works with local small businesses to provide products to students that help support healthy habits for students eating at school. Although there are multiple partners, this article will highlight just three businesses that are contributing to the community through our 2019-2020 food programming in schools.
Durango School District 9-R is hosting two Community School Safety Forums during the month of October, which is also School Safety Month. This is a great time to review safety measures to date, learn more about our trainings and vision for school safety, learn about next steps and share your feedback.
State assessments are one of the many tools utilized by teachers and district staff to gain an understanding on how each student is progressing toward competency. Before we can understand how students are achieving, it is important to define what competency is. There are set expectations for what students should know and understand before progressing through the pk-12 system and achieving the ultimate goal of a diploma. The Colorado Department of Education sets these competencies through its various subject standards for each grade level, and districts and teachers set the pace with students on when those milestones will be achieved.
Durango School District 9-R believes that participation in athletics and activities helps our students achieve academic excellence. Our athletics/activities program is aligned with CHSAA and is an integral part of our students’ education. Students who participate in athletic and activity programs have better school attendance, fewer disciplinary problems and higher graduation rates. The Durango School District 9-R takes great pride in the efforts and accomplishments of all our participants!
